1.0 Introduction

Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Bukit Indah is a primary school located within the housing area of Bukit Indah in Johor Bahru. The school started its journey with Frog in 2016 when Cikgu Fadzli Ishak was chosen as the school’s Frog Admin, who is also a Gold Advocate. Last year, the school participated in the FrogPlay Championships and made it to the Top 20. The achievement fueled the eagerness of the school community to strive for victory this year in the FrogPlay World Championships.

2.0 Initiatives

2.1 Parent Engagement

Parent Teacher Association (PIBG) Committee

  • The initiative started last year when Cikgu Fadzli approached the PIBG committee to get parents on-board in supporting the use of FrogPlay in school and at home.
  • A Telegram group chat was created for parents so that they can directly be in contact with Cikgu Fadzli for any technical support on how use FrogPlay, how to access quizzes, etc.

Kumpulan Sokongan Ibu Bapa (KSIB)

  • Each class has a parent representative ready to assist and guide parents with FrogPlay.
  • Whenever Headmaster or Cikgu Fadzli speak to parents about FrogPlay, these parent representatives will also validate and support what is being said as an assurance to other parents.

Headmaster’s involvement

  • Headmaster has organised meetings with parents to explain more about FrogPlay, while Cikgu Fadzli supported with data of student progress, especially students from the back classes.

Hanging banners along the school route

  • Cikgu Fadzli proposed to hang banners along the school route to build more awareness on the FrogPlay World Championships. The banners were funded by the PIBG committee.

3.0 Success Stories

3.1 Resistant parents become supporters of Frog

  • Through constant engagement by Headmaster and PIBG, parents have become more supportive of FrogPlay being used in school and at home. However, some parents were still against FrogPlay with an initial thinking that FrogPlay is a gaming application and does not bring any benefit to their children.
  • Headmaster, Cikgu Fadzli and PIBG came together to explain to parents that FrogPlay is a gamified-learning application, where students are required to complete quizzes before they get to play games. However, parents were still not very convinced.
  • Parents from KSIB stepped in to explain to parents about FrogPlay and gave assurance that FrogPlay is an educational application and helps students learn better with interactive quizzes and games.
  • Resistant parents slowly came to understand what FrogPlay is all about and began allowing their children to use FrogPlay at home for revision.

3.2 Students explore more on coding

How did it start

  • Frog VLE allowed applications to be embedded into the platform through codes and this caught students attention. Cikgu Fadzli realised that students had an interest in coding and began exploring more on it.
  • He conducted Hour of Code (HOC) workshops in school, following the campaign organised by MTech and Ministry of Education. Campaign ends on August 3, 2018. Cikgu Fadzli aims to have all students have knowledge on basic coding.

Outcome

  • Cikgu Fadzli embedded the code.org in the dashboard, allowing students to try out in building their own codes. Some examples of what students have done with coding:
    - Through coding, students are able to build house in Minecraft.
    - Through coding, students are able to draw geometrical forms of Princess Ana and Queen Elsa, characters from the cartoon “Frozen”.

It is great to have parents involvement in school because the opinion of one parent to another carries more weight compared to the opinion of a teacher to a parent. I’m glad to have parents supporting my explanations when I was speaking about FrogPlay to parents who were initially resistant.
